Tracking dots.. brilliant! Looks like you guys are going to have WAY to much fun with setup. :) Can't wait to see what comes out of it.
Do.. Do your neighbors look at you funny when you walk by yet? *chuckles*

No, because, fortunately, all of them put up cinderblock walls around their yards, and thus around MINE (Didn't cost me a cent! LOL), so unless they climb their walls to peek or go up on their rooves, I'm not attracting their attention.

Now that's cool!
And that creature Larry created is spectacular, how long did it take him to make?
Just curious Baron, how long have you been working with film and this kind of stiff?

I'm not quite sure how long it took Larry to make that puppet head, but I can tell you that Larry is
FAST
, and since it's just a head and not a full-bodied creature, it probably didn't take him much time at all.
I've been playing around with film and

animation since I was eleven years old and got my first Super-8 movie camera (which I still have and which still works, BTW!). I have an album here called "Super-8 Silliness". and you can find some of my early work there, the most ancient of which at the moment is "no-CAN-Do".

Ain't it though? Heck, I'm gonna subdivide the grid and put more dots on there. It'll make match-moving even easier!

It's simple, really--and even easier for YOU because you have AfterEffects with the capability of Motion Paths for video (or still images). I had to use Flash!
I stuck the dots on the greenscreen in a "grid" formation. If a camera is moving or hand-held
more...
the dots show the wall in relation to the camera's or my movement.
To
match
the new background element (like the Tyrant's Command Center, in my case here) to the
moves
of the dot grid on the greenscreen, I orient the background to my actor, then reduce the alpha/opacity of one of the video layers, so I can see where the dots are in relation to my background. I keyframe wherever the dots start and stop moving and I reposition the background accordingly, so it matches up with the same places on the grid every time. The computer does the inbetweening (In Flash, I would just click "create motion tween"). There are places in this video where I faded the new background out considerably so you can see the grid dots moving along with it. In a more complex situation, tilting and resizing of the background is necessary, but I kept it simple for this test.

Backyard Backlot: Outdoor Chroma Key Wall Test No.2
Now the wall has been completely coated with Professsional-Grade ROSCO Chroma Key Green VideoPaint (Also avaialble in Chroma Key Blue). We paid around $72.00 US for a gallon of this stuff, but ONE COAT

gets the job done, where I previously used THREE coats of Behr Premium house paint. If time is money on your set, then the Rosco paints definitely save you money. It's a cost versus value argument. Big thanks to my best bud Larry Lo Presti for coming over on his days off and helping me get this project more and more completed.
