Uh... Wouldn't it have been easier to paint the background before sticking the monster on it?

In this case, no. The monster is part of the background at this point, and the paint job didn't take that long anyway. You can see some test footage in a later video. It looks great!

Cool! Is that creature a puppet? You stand behind it to operate the mouth?

Precisely! It's made out of latex. It will take two people to operate it: myself on the mouth and another operator blinking the eyes. Since it's a floating spirit creature, it's affixed to a solid board painted green.
