Michael Sandy (10/12/1977-10/13/2006), 28, from Brooklyn, New York, died after being hit by a car while trying to more...escape four attackers who attempted to rob him because he was gay. He was a native of Bellport, NY, and lived in East Williamsburg, Brooklyn. He worked as a display designer at the Ikea store in Hicksville, NY. On the night of 10/08/06, Sandy met Anthony Fortunato, 20, in an online gay chatroom and engaged in a chat with him. With Fortunato was John Fox, 19 and 2 others. Fortunato arranged to meet Sandy at Plumb Beach, a rest stop on Belt Parkway in Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn. Attempting to escape after the 4 men started beating and robbing him, Sandy ran toward the highway. Two of his attackers caught up with him in the right lane of the highway. He was punched and knocked in front of a car. Unconscious and suffering possible brain injuries, he remained on life support for five days, never regaining consciousness. less
