LEARN FROM MY EXPERIENCE BACK UP PLAN:

It may be helpful to have a backup person or number that your sweetheart can call if there is a glitch in the clues. This person can steer your significant other in the right direction, if needed.

THE HUNT OVERVIEW – HOW IT WILL WORK:
Please note that the clues are sequential, with one location leading to another. See clue templates below this overview.

MIX AND MATCH: Feel free to use any clues from the “Couples Living In The Same House” document – some of them are different from those outlined below AND/OR add your own locations and ideas.

1.Flowers arrive with the first clue written on the card. The clue will lead your sweetheart to the mailbox. (See clue templates below for suggested wording and alternate locations.)
2.The mailbox will contain a wrapped gift that is something your sweetheart considers romantic---chocolates, a special CD, bubble bath, wine, candles, lingerie, etc. (We’ve included a little questionnaire for you to fill out about your significant other which we hope will inspire gift ideas – see our Gift Guidance Questionnaire.) NOTE: Include a sturdy bag to hold the gifts collected during the hunt.

3.The mailbox will also have the next clue that provides instructions to dial a phone number and listen for the special message* on the answering machine or voice mail. The phone number can be to your home phone or cell phone, where you have changed your message to something like “Your next clue may be found at ______________.”. Pick a place that’s convenient and still open for business ---- the library, a nearby store, a neighbor’s porch, etc. If you choose a public place, most customer service or clerks are very willing to help if you explain --- especially if you pick a place where they recognize you. Alternate idea: If you have a personal website, such as facebook.com or myspace.com, you can post your clue there. You could also have them call a trusted friend, who would tell them where to go. *If you know no one else will hear the message, make it as personal or intimate as you want.

4.At the location you selected will be another wrapped romantic gift. This clue will provide instructions to look in the local newspaper’s classified ads. Include a quarter for your sweetheart to purchase one.

5.In the newspaper is an ad that you’ve placed, directing your sweetheart to a special restaurant. (See pre-hunt “to do” list below for more details on placing the ad.)
6.If your time and money are limited, the more...hunt can end here (you would be waiting at the restaurant of course). However, if you want the hunt to continue on, you will have pre-ordered and pre-paid for takeout. There will also be a small wrapped box for the hostess or maitre d’ to give your sweetheart (it may help if you choose a restaurant that you frequent often or know the staff). Inside of this box is a hotel key and another clue with instructions to go to the hotel bringing the bag of gifts they have been collecting all night, and the take out dinner. You will be at the hotel waiting for an intimate evening. We trust you can take it from here.

PRE-HUNT TO DO LIST

1.Change the wording on the clue templates below to fit your chosen locations. Be sure to un-highlight the yellow highlighted words once you have finished editing. Print out the clues. Cut out the clues and place them in envelopes labeled “Clue One”, “Clue Two”, etc. Put a quarter in the 4th clue envelope if you placed the ad in the newspaper.

2.Buy and gift-wrap your romantic presents. You will need two gifts if you do this hunt the way it is written. Chocolates, special music, bubble bath, lingerie, bottle of wine, candles, lotions, etc. are some suggestions. (Remember, we’ve included a little questionnaire for you to fill out about your significant other which we hope will inspire gift ideas – see our Gift Guidance Questionnaire.)

3.If needed, arrange for a babysitter.

4.Buy flowers (see our additional resources document for a link to an online florist that will give you a special discount on your purchase). Finding the flowers will start this romantic hunt. You can either provide the first clue on the florist gift card or you can have the flowers delivered to you or a friend and add the clue yourself. You can then get your baby sitter or that friend to deliver the flowers to your sweetheart or you can hide them somewhere at his/her home (like in the bathtub or an outdoor closet/shed). At the time you want the hunt to begin, call your sweetheart with instructions on where to look for the flowers/first clue.

5.Put a wrapped gift inside of your sweetheart’s mailbox with the 2nd clue. Alternate location: an outside closet/shed or a neighbor’s house.

6.Leave a message to the next location on your answering machine, voice mail or whatever device you have chosen to use. (Don’t forget to change it back!)

7.At your next chosen location, leave another wrapped gift with the 3rd clue envelope with the quarter.

8.Take out an ad in the classified section of your local newspaper. This can sometimes be done online and with a charge card. The prices vary from paper to paper. If the date of your hunt falls in the middle and end of the week, most papers will take the ad the day before. If you need the ad for a weekend or a Monday, the ad will need to be placed by that Friday. Some papers have an announcement section that could be used or a personal section. It really varies from place to place.

Here are some examples of the cost of ads from some larger papers around the U.S. Prices are of course subject to change. Your local paper should be less expensive.

The Post & Courier (Charleston, SC) - $20.30
Seattle Times - $24 for 2 lines for 7 days
Washington Post - $29 for 3 days for 3 lines
Orlando Sentinel - $26.60 for 7 days listed in print and online
New York Times - $6.50 per line, must have 4 lines (so, $26 minimum)

Try it peeps
